An educational tool for locals and holidaymakers alike has moved slightly this year.
The Field Studies Council’s ‘Beach Activity Trailer’ is testing out a new location after Storm Emma’s destruction earlier this year.
The trailer, which originally right next to and facing the beach along Slapton Line, has now moved to face Slapton Ley. The places that the trailer used to sit have been washed away by the sea and are no longer viable for hosting it.
FSC’s aim was to find a place that is easy to access and enjoyable to visit. So although the new location isn’t facing the beach, it is facing the Ley and ‘everything it has to offer’.
The trailer comes complete with a telescope for some wildlife spotting, offering multiple ways to discover the nature reserve and the surrounding areas.
FSC provides many free events, walks and activities, as well as take-home activities for extra learning. There is also the opportunity to learn about what the FSC is about and how to get involved, plus extra information about the history and natural history of the area including wartime stories and how the shingle ridge was formed.
The Beach Activities Trailer can be found at Torcross just north of the carpark inside the new carved entrance posts. It is open for the summer holidays and weekends in September.
The Field Studies Council is an environmental education charity committed to helping people discover, explore, understand and be inspired by the natural world. Its network of centres provides day and residential courses for all ages from young children to retired adults from schools and communities throughout the UK.
