It has been a case of jolly hockey sticks for youngsters at Harbertonford Primary School.

Many of the pupils had never played hockey before they won a spot in the newly formed school team – and ended up second in a local league of eight schools.

The Year 5 and 6 youngsters took part in the primary schools’ hockey league at King Edward VI Community College throughout November and December.

A spokesman for the school said: “The newly formed school hockey team faced tough opposition from eight other schools and finished second overall.

“Their team spirit and the skill shown were exemplary, particularly as they hadn’t played together before.

“The whole team thoroughly enjoyed the experience and were very proud to receive their runners-up medals.”
