A village primary school’s pupils enjoyed a trip to north Devon for a three day residential to start the new academic year.
Key Stage 2 children have just returned from Rock and Rapids outdoor centre near South Molton where they got to try a range of activities like climbing, raft building and surfing.
Holbeton Primary School prides itself on its outdoor learning ethos, and youngsters benefit from regular forest school and beach school sessions on the Flete Estate, along with the outdoor classroom and play area on site. The school welcomed nine new pupils into its reception class this year.
Teacher Harry White described the trip. He said: "We wasted no time settling in and after a quick lunch went straight into tackling the assault course. Following this we had enough time to try our hand at rock climbing.
"This was a real highlight for some with a few children reaching the dizzying heights at the summit.
"Monday evening was brought to a close with an evening trip down the zip line. Following this we slid into our beds in preparation for what was to be a packed day of water sports.
"Tuesday began with Mothecombe class being split in two and tasked with building and testing a raft on the lake. KS2’s teamwork was put to the test as ropes were tied and barrels bound together, and the result was two successful vessels that sailed with ease.
"Following on from this, we tried our hand at canoeing, where each member of KS2 made the brave attempt to board one-another’s canoe before heading back to land. Then those bold enough all went out on a giant stand up paddle board, before a leap into what can best be described as ‘refreshing’ water.
"The day was concluded with a barbeque around the campfire and roasted marshmallows for dessert, the perfect conclusion to a busy day.
"Wednesday was our final day and we went out with a bang. Surfing was the order of the day and although there were a few crashes and splashes, many of KS2 went away with an enthusiasm to continue to develop their sporting skills.”
Headteacher Jackie Rundle added: “We want our children to strive to be the best in all they do and so succeed at challenging goals that they set themselves. We encourage our children to work together across the age groups and help each other, and this trip has encouraged them to do that and so develop their self confidence.
"The skills they have learned apply equally in the classroom, and give different children the chance to excel in the outdoor, practical setting."
