In early 2016, KPS’s Head of School learned of the Diana Award Anti-bullying campaign. This campaign aims to train children aged 5-18 to help other children experiencing difficult times and bullying.

After consultations with the children the school decided to hold an election. The candidates gave impassioned speeches and a secret ballot was held. This led to the first set of ambassadors being elected.

In March 2016, these ambassadors and two staff members travelled to Dorset to take part in the Diana Award Anti-Bullying Ambassadors training.

The day was inspiring for the school’s young people; they began to understand the impact bullying can have on others.

They used drama, team games and watched video footage to help get the message across. All returned fully-trained ambassadors.

From this the ambassadors set to work, each taking turns to be on duty at playtimes to help others in need.

They also felt they wanted the parents/ carers to understand how vital their work was and later that term held a parents’ meeting explaining how bullying can impact on young people and what we can all do to help.

They didn’t stop there they:

have arranged numerous cakes sales to help raise funds for more resources;

held a yellow day where everyone came dressed in yellow to show their support;

held a compliments lunchtime where they gave out labels with kind thoughtful personalised messages on;

arranged an event where children wrote positive messages on each other’s t-shirts, organised sleep overs;

created a worry box and most importantly held drop in sessions every lunchtime for any children who felt they needed someone to talk to.

Last week, the school held new elections, as most of the ambassadors are moving on shortly to their secondary school settings.

Each of the new candidates delivered their manifestos and speeches with passion.

To coincide with the General Election, every child made their choice and visited the polling station to cast their vote in the ballot box.

The retaining officers counted the votes and the election results were announced last Friday.

The new ambassadors will now spend the next few weeks shadowing the current ambassadors, learning their new roles.
