World Book Day proved particularly gripping at one local primary school thanks to a visit from author Simon James.

Stowford School in Ivybridge welcomed Simon to talk to pupils about his life as a writer and illustrator of children’s books. Each group listened intently as Simon read a few of his books, showing the illustrations on the big screen.

Simon James studied at Plymouth Art College building on his childhood fascination with drawing and making little story books held together with staples. Now, he has books published in over twenty languages around the world, including the Baby Brains books, My Friend Whale and his first book, The Day Jake Vacuumed.

Children and staff also dressed as their favourite book characters to celebrate the day, with many inventive costumes bringing the characters to life, especially during play and lunchtime. At the end of the day parents were invited in to share the fun of reading. There was also the opportunity to meet Simon and buy his books after school.

Year 2 teacher Lucy Burrows said: “It was lovely to see all the children dressed up for World Book Day, and the effort they put into making their characters come to life. Simon James is an inspiration and we may well have some budding authors in the near future.”
