Following Monday night’s town meeting, excellently chaired by mayor Chris Povey, it all boils down to one thing: should we allow 50 expensive apartments to be built on the quay? I feel to do so would be a travesty.

We may park cars on it at the moment, but it is a public open space, owned by the community, an amenity to be enjoyed by us all and not just by a privileged few.

It could benefit the community in so many ways in the future, so we must think ahead for our children’s sake and not just build on it for short-term financial gain.

Once some buildings go up, it will just be the thin end of the wedge. Once gone there is no way back.

As we heard at the meeting, there are other ways in which ‘affordable housing’ could be financed, and so the district council must be encouraged to seek those out and not ruin a gem in the centre of our lovely town. Hands off Kingsbridge!
