DODBROOKE and Kingsbridge Christmas Primestock Show allows local cattle, sheep and produce to be shown off.
Held at Colehanger Barn, East Allington, by kind permission of Norman Eastley on Tuesday, December 6, the show was a ‘particular success’.
Andrea Hack, Luscombe Maye estate agents said: ‘The show was a particular success, not only because of the increased number of exhibitors and attendees, but also the quality of the livestock, roots and corn was remarked on as probably being of a higher standard than in previous years.
‘The judges themselves admitted it was difficult to differentiate from the quality of exhibits, to decide who was the winner in each class.’
In the cattle classes, the Luscombe Maye Perpetual Challenge Cup for the champion halter-led beast was won by B, MJ and Miss C Quantick, who were also awarded the Crediton Milling Champion Bullock £75 prize money for the champion halter led bullock.
The Pewter Challenge Cup for the best local butcher’s beast, given by Messrs KW Durrant, JE Hannaford and Sons, Rossiter and Lidstones, and Winzer and Sons butchers, was won by Mrs Sue Fildes, who also won the Alfred Darke Memorial Perpetual Challenge Cup.
The Ekers Challenge Cup for the best turned out and handled animal, not being a first prize winner and judged by the President, was won by Mr Chris Heath and the Frank Gloyn Perpetual Cup for the champion local South Devon beast in the show was won by Mr SB Trant.
In the sheep classes, the Cyril Heath Memorial Perpetual Challenge Cup for the champion pen of sheep in the show was won by Mr R Bond, and the Edward Tucker Memorial Cup for the best local entry in the lightweight class was won by Messrs A and R Darke. The Most Points Cup was won by Messrs JA Darke Limited, closely followed by Messrs A and R Darke.
The produce section of the show was supported very well again this year, with many entries in each class.
The prize for the Young Farmer with the most points gained in the produce section was awarded jointly to Philip Rogers and Matt Darke, and the day was rounded off with a very well supported dinner at The Cottage Hotel, Hope Cove with the speaker, Andy Bradley, kindly acting as the guest speaker and giving a very entertaining talk.
The dinner was followed by a successful auction and raffle, to help raise funds for next year’s show.
