To quote from your front page, May 11, regarding not reopening Dartmouth and Kingswear Hospital.
“Staff work closely with GPs, etc to provide tailored packages of health care and social care in peoples homes and communities so we only care for them in hospital when that is the best place to be.”
My mother was transferred from Torbay to Newton Abbot a month ago.
She would have been transferred to Dartmouth hospital as she has been before on numerous occasions.
She has been waiting for a care package for 2.5 weeks to go home.
If she had been moved to Dartmouth hospital, I could have visited every day after work and longer at weekends.
Public transport from Dartmouth to Newton Abbot Hospital takes ages. I am feeling stressed, upset and guilty by lack of visiting my mother – I work full time.
My mother is upset, anxious and becoming a bit mentally confused without the stimulation of a family visit.
Her recent comment to me was: “I just do not understand why the hospital closed. I want to be there.
“At least if I had to wait there for a care package, I am near home and can have visits from you.”
We need the hospital to reopened or an alternative provision in place.
I phoned Newton Abbot hospital last week and she is one of a few waiting for care packages to go home.
Something needs to be done.
