Some Dartmouth residents will be going to the polls to elect a new Town Councillor for Dartmouth Clifton Ward.

The polls will be open between 7am and 10pm on Tuesday, September 8.

There are two candidates who are John Darby for Reform UK proposed and seconded by Philip Langman and Colin Jones and the other candidate Daniel Taylor who is an independent and is proposed and seconded by Laurence Chadfield and Lynn Garton.

The polling stations, Dartmouth Guildhall No 1 and Dartmouth Guildhall No 2 are both on Victoria Road.

Dartmouth Town Council is led by Town Mayor Cllr Graham Webb and there are 16 elected members serving the Clifton and Townstal wards.

They serve a total population of around 6,000 people.

The Town Council now holds two Full Council meetings each month, usually on the second and fourth Monday.

It is chaired by the Mayor and includes all 16 Councillors.

Full Council sets the budget and precept, and policy framework within which all decisions must sit.

It appoints the committee members and the committee chairs.

The Town Council has two standing committees that sit underneath Full Council.

These are the Planning Committee and the Staffing Committee.

Each committee has been given certain delegated powers to act on behalf of the Council, this information is available within the ‘Scheme of Delegation & Committee Terms of Reference’ policy.

The Town Council can establish working groups and appoint councillors, as well as individuals from outside the Council who have relevant skills or expertise.

Working groups are less formal than committees and operate under their own terms of reference.

They do not have decision-making powers. Instead, they consider matters in detail, gather evidence, and make recommendations to the Town Council where appropriate.
