I wish Dartmouth Town Council well as it takes over the running of various parks and gardens.

As finally it’s a dream come true I would like to see the New Ground, one which stands Mayor’s Avenue car park, included in this package as it might be considered a very lucrative car park by South Hams District Council but it is actually land held in common by all of us who reside here in town.

What is worrying me is the rumblings of the district council doing a deal with one of the national car parking companies to run its car parks and, if this is true, we might lose this fine open space forever.

Personally I don’t like it being used as a car park but I can see that there is a need, so let’s have it back and leastways have the money from it to supplement the running costs of the town. We have lost our banks and are fighting to keep our currently closed hospital, so we should be making sure the New Ground does not follow in their wake.

We also need be careful that our town council is reminded now and again that it is not a holding company but running the town primarily for all of us.

When I was a young man, it was a good, wealthy caring authority and I am sure it can be again.
