A horse needs a name before she starts her racing career and her owners want it to be “inspired by Kingsbridge”.
Adrian King runs the Kingsbridge-based Henacre Racing Club, and this year they have three horses carrying the black and white colours of ‘Team Henacre’, all trained in Devon, and one, a two-year-old filly by Mukhadram, needs a name before she makes her debut in the Spring.
Adrian said: “I would like her name to be inspired by Kingsbridge or the surrounding area. I would hope that this would encourage people to follow her career and help ignite a passion for racing in some local residents."This filly would not be the first to carry a name linked to the region; Her Majesty The Queen's 'Dartmouth' retired to stud last year having won eight of his 20 starts and yielding £683,300 in earnings."Henacre Racing strives to make the notoriously secretive world of racing as accessible and transparent as possible."If anyone who wants to put a name suggestion forward also wants to visit the stables - Higher Eastington, Crediton, to see the horse and find out more about a racehorse's routine and life away from the racecourse, they are more than welcome."
Mervyn Broom, who we spoke to last week when we found out he had been visiting Newton Abbot racecourse for more than 80 years, has agreed to be the judge and choose his favourite name for the filly. The person who has their name picked by Mr Broom would also be welcome to join Henacre Racing as she makes her debut.
We will put the deadline for names at 5pm on Friday, March 2. Names must be no more than 18 characters and must be submitted to the British Horseracing Authority for approval.
