Fundraising for Christian Aid this year saw the ever-generous people of one South Hams town donate nearly two-and-a-half thousand pounds.
Christian Aid Week ran from May 14 to 21 this year, and as usual the charity’s Kingsbridge group seized the opportunity to raise some money.
The group collected at local supermarkets, in the town centre and door to door for the refugee charity, which was set up in the aftermath of the second world war. £2,430 has been raised so far, with donations still coming in.
The Kingsbridge group’s organiser Lawrence Townsend paid tribute to the generosity of townsfolk. He said: "We are very grateful to all the generous people who donated in support of refugees, in spite of the weather.
"Last year £14m was raised nationally during the week. The charity works in 50 or 60 countries worldwide, using local partner organisations to identify things like roads and hospitals that are needed. This is a good way of funding these things - we are far away and we don’t really know what is needed.
"One result of the refugee crisis is that families get split up, a terrible thing. Children are struggling with their education and health problems. One thing Christian Aid is trying to do this year is to provide catering equipment, so that people can have a meal together. This is a really big part of maintaining a community."
