South Hams good causes are set to benefit from a share of a £19,000 charity giveaway by the freemasons.

Every spring and autumn freemasons from across Devon get together to support local organisations that require financial assistance, from children’s charities to hospices and cancer charities.

This Friday, June 2, The Right Worshipful Brother Ian Kingsbury JP, provincial grand master for Devonshire will be presenting cheques to 20 organisations at a meeting at the Masonic Hall in Teignmouth. The total given out will be £19,000.

The money donated by Devon masons comes from the Wake Fund, set up by the Right Worshipful Brother William Alexander Kneel. Mr Kneel, provincial grand master from 1970 to 1984, was also the owner of Kneels laundry & dry cleaners, now Johnsons.

Since it was initiated the fund has grown, through the continued generosity of Devon freemasons and judicious investments, today standing at more than £1.9m. Trustees distribute the income generated each year, currently around £45,000.

Since the first money was donated in 2001 nearly £700,000 has been given to more than 740 organisations and charities. Beneficiaries have been chosen by members of Devon’s 133 masonic lodges.

2017 is particularly significant for the organisation, as it celebrates 300 years of freemasonry in England.

In the South Hams Yealmpton Cricket Club and Salcombe Minibus have been chosen to receive a share of the money.
