A jazz band is welcoming a special guest to the jazz club session this week.

The Flavel’s popular house jazz band, the Martin Dale Trio is welcoming Enrico Tomasso, a top trumpeter to the session on Saturday, August 11.

Tomasso is considered one of the top trumpeters on the jazz scene and has won the best trumpet category at the British Jazz Awards four times.

He is a popular figure at festivals and clubs around Europe and his vibrant and charismatic personality on stage places him in the top echelon.

The top trumpeter was exposed to the best of jazz from when he was born and started playing the trumpet at the age of five.

His father, a jazz clarinettist, nurtured and encouraged his inherent talent and gave him every opportunity to hear and meet many of the jazz greats including Benny Goodman, Oscar Peterson, Buddy Rich, Dizzy Gillespie, the Basie and Ellington bands.

Tomasso’s biggest inspiration was Louis Armstrong, for whom he played to welcome off the plane as he arrived in 1968 for a stint at Batley Variety Club.

Louis took the seven year old Tomasso under his wing for two weeks inviting him as his personal guest every night and giving him advice. This led to friendship and correspondence during the last years of Louis’ life and a career playing with many familiar names including the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, the Ray Gelato Giants and Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Orchestra.

Tomasso has played jazz with the likes of Johnny Dankworth , Kenny Ball, Chris Barber, Humphrey Littleton, George Melly, Jools Holland among many others.

He has also backed other famous recording artists from Amy Winehouse to Clair Teal as well as joining Bryan Ferry on many of his world tours.
