KINGSBRIDGE'S Tumbly Hill day care centre is to remain open – much to the delight of users and their families. The announcement came on Monday when Devon County Council published the long awaited results of their consultation into adult social care. Tumbly Hill is to be 'integrated' with Ropewalk centre for adults with learning disabilities. Both services will be provided from Tumbly Hill. The council said a lack of alternatives for day care in the area made closing the centre impossible. The news was greeted with joy by people who use the centre, as well as their carers and families, who have had an uncertain few months. Mary Doswell, who goes to Tumbly Hill twice a week said: 'I'm delighted. I'm really happy – except I want to see what happens with the staff. 'But, for me, it means I can still go to Tumbly Hill and for that I'm truly grateful.' Pauline Hunt, whose mother attends the centre, said: 'It's excellent news. I'll reserve judgment until I know all the details, but it's a damn sight better than closing it.' Speaking of the wait for the decision to be made she said: 'It's been dreadful – my mother didn't have a clue it was on the verge of closing. I'm very pleased it's staying. 'She absolutely loves it. This morning she said "I don't want to get up", but when I said she was going to Tumbly Hill to flirt with her boyfriends she said "oh, great". It's familiar to her, and she really needs the social contact.' Brenda Gilchrist's mother also goes to Tumbly Hill. She said: 'Both my mother and I are delighted Tumbly Hill day centre will remain open so that our elderly and vulnerable people can remain together receiving the service they need.
