WENDY JONES of Dartmouth Launderette, Market Street, writes: How dare Cllr Roger Chilcott, the town council's representative on the Dartmouth Business Improvement District board, say our local shopkeepers should 'get off their backsides and do something for themselves occasionally'. If he had bothered to look around the town at Christmas, he would have noticed that many shops had put up their own lights in an effort to brighten up the town. As a small business owner myself, who already pays high business rates, I am now being forced to pay £1,500 over the next five years, even though I voted against the BID initially. I am being threatened by court proceedings and bailiffs and the outcome will affect my credit rating. I consider this blackmail. Small businesses are being badly squeezed in Dartmouth at the moment. But I, for one would much rather give my BID levy money to Nigel Way to put towards the removal of the Christmas lights, which he worked so hard to raise money for. He at least has Dartmouth people at heart. I think Dartmouth town councillors should get off their backsides and help the town. That's what they are there for.
