Michael Sturdee, of Culver Park Close, Kingsbridge, writes:

There seems to be an awful lot of bitterness from Brexiteers. I cannot understand why: they won, what more do they want?

I fought hard to Remain, but I accept the result, with sadness but without bitterness, and I hope I speak for most of us Remainers.

I think the country should come together now to make the new arrangement work, with the best possible agreement with the European Union, our major trading partner.

I note that already, without our counterweight to restrain them, the centralising forces there are becoming stronger. There is no going back, the door is closing.

However, all that is not to say that I accept that we were wrong.

After all, in our democracy when the Conservatives or Labour lose a general election, they accept that they are out of power, but continue to fight for what they believe to be right.

Do the Brexiteers expect the Remainers to do otherwise? And if the Remainers had won, there is no way the Brexiteers would have gone home quietly, is there?

It will take a long time to settle down after leaving. I am sure that when that is eventually done all will be fine and dandy. I hope our prosperity then will be strong enough to make up for the hard times we – especially the worse-off – are, it seems, to go through.
