A man who was arrested following a siege involving armed police officers in Kingsbridge, has appeared before Plymouth Crown Court.

Stephen Yabsley, 53, was remanded in custody to appear at the court on June 1 on charges of attempted murder of two police officers.

Police were called to Redford Way, Kingsbridge, following a dispute between neighbours.

During the course of the officers' interactions with Mr Yabsley they were attacked with power tools and two were rushed to hospital. Due to the use of weapons, armed officers were called in to deal with the situation. Mr Yabsley was arrested at 8.30pm.

Following the incident, many people began commenting on social media.

While there was an out-pouring of sympathy and 'get well soon' messages to the officers, there were also questions asked about the way the police handled the situation. However, this week the police were unable to respond to the comments as the investigation is ongoing .

According to the Citizen's Advice Bureau website, police can only enter premises without a warrant to deal with a breach of the peace or prevent it, enforce an arrest warrant, arrest a person in connection with certain offences, recapture someone who has escaped from custody or save life or prevent serious damage to property.

Both of the injured police officers have since been released from hospital and are recovering. Mr Yabsley will next appear in Plymouth Crown Court on June 1.
