BRIAN COX, of Ugborough Road, Bittaford, writes: Graham Collyer's articles are always interesting to read, however I would question his description of the farm activity shown, Gazette, February 20. As a schoolboy I spent a few summers in the mid-1930s helping to bring in the harvest in a farm in Staffordshire, and I can recall stooking sheaves of corn – probably wheat – and helping to load the carts when they were ready for threshing. The threshing machine was similar to the one shown in the picture. I cannot remember whether it was driven by a steam engine or diesel tractor. The ricks look more like straw than hay and I don't think that the 'made hay' would go through the process shown here. I may be mistaken, but I felt I should raise this query. If I am wrong, then I apologise to Mr Collyer.
