Another Plastic Clever award has been given to a company in Salcombe.

Coast & Country Cottages has received a Plastic Clever award from the Plastic Clever campaign spreading through Salcombe, after taking steps to reduce the use of plastic within the business and encouraging staff to cut down on their use at work and at home.

The drive to think more responsibly about single-use plastics is being championed by local environmentalist Anna Turns and her daughter Ella, 6, in conjunction with the Kids Against Plastic campaign.

The changes undertaken by Coast & Country include stopping the use of plastic water glasses in the office, using canvas and paper bags instead of plastic carrier bags and the use of completely plastic free children’s flags and other gifts for events.

Directors of Coast & Country, Karen and Andrew Jones received the Plastic Clever award from Ella in the Salcombe office on Monday, February 5.

“We are very pleased to have been awarded this certificate” commented Andrew. “Anna and Ella are doing fantastic work to raise awareness of Kids Against Plastic and to encourage local businesses to be more responsible and ‘plastic clever’.

“We hope many more companies in the area will join the initiative and strive to make changes in the face of this enormous global issue.”

Anna explains that “we can all do our little bit to make sure that plastics don’t litter our local coastline or reach the sea beyond”.

Alongside Ella, the mother and daughter campaign team believe the solutions are simple and they are encouraging people to switch to reusable alternatives on a daily basis-such as metal drink bottles or cloth shopping bags.

“It’s great to have Coast & Country on board with our campaign-it goes beyond the food and drink industry, any business, organisation or school can become plastic clever and help spread the word to our wider community” added Anna.
