Gordon Waterhouse, of Hedgegrove, Sorley Cross, Kingsbridge, writes: Please may I add my voice to those objecting to the prospect of waterskiing on the Salcombe-Kingsbridge estuary. The place for this exhilarating sport is to the south of Salcombe Bar, not on the estuary. Whether we use the estuary for work or pleasure, and whether we are residents or tourists, the relative tranquility of the estuary is one of its greatest assets. The noise and potential extra danger would degrade this quality. As residents, my wife and I have enjoyed walking, sailing and cruising around the estuary for more than 40 years; it has been a place to experience beauty, peace and enjoyment. As a teacher, like many others, I have used the estuary as an educational resource, reflecting on its history and natural history and the value of those things. As a scientist researching and writing about the wildlife, I have seen evidence of the disturbance that sudden noise can bring for the birds that use the estuary in their thousands. Waterskiing is not an appropriate activity on this precious local nature reserve and site of special scientific interest.
