Police were forced to deploy a taser after threats of "extreme" violence from a missing man.

Police were searching the Salcombe area for a man who was reported as missing from Plymouth. At around 2.40pm, they received "numerous" calls from members of the public who were concerned for the welfare of a man on Millbay Beach, East Portlemouth.

The police helicopter attended the scene and found the man on the beach below the Venus Cafe, and managed to identify him as the man missing from Plymouth.

When police attended the scene, the man made threats of "serious and extreme" violence towards the officers and they were forced to deploy a taser.

The man was then detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to Exeter Hospital, where he was left in the care of healthcare professionals.
