Firefighters helped rescue a volunteer first aider after he slipped on a kerb and broke his leg at an annual South Hams event.

Crews from Buckfastleigh helped the injured man after he fell over at the South Brent Winter Carnival on Saturday, November 30.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said one of its firefighters, who is a student paramedic, provided care until the ambulance arrived.

The man is now recovering after surgery.

A fire service spokesman said: "The injured person was a volunteer who was there to provide first aid response during the carnival.

"Unfortunately, he slipped on a roadside kerb and broke his leg.

"As we had a student paramedic on our crew we left him behind to provide care and wait for an ambulance to attend.

"The rest of the crew continued leading the carnival when we knew that the required resources where on scene.

"The man had an operation on his leg earlier this week."

Buckfastleigh Fire Station said: "We had a great time leading South Brent Carnival and there were some amazing floats.

"We had to leave one of our crew members, Joe Cartwright, behind to assist a member of the carnival’s first aid team who had tripped on a kerb and broke his leg.

"We wish him a speedy recovery."
