After commemorating Firefighters memorial day, the town’s fire brigade were immediately called into action to prevent an unstable roof from injuring pedestrians.

The Dartmouth fire brigade came to the assistance of the Flavel church by removing a potentially dangerous piece of loose masonry last Friday.

Part of the capstone on the church had delaminated and was resting precariously against a pinnacle on the north east corner of the building, potentially causing a hazard to pedestrians if it fell.

The firefighters who had just been observing a two minutes silence for Firefighters Memorial Day in Avenue Gardens offered the use of their ladders to reach the offending item and safely remove it.

One of the church leaders, Karl Stone said it was a “weight off” his mind now. “We had noticed it was loose but had no means of reaching it, we are really grateful for the kind intervention by Dartmouth firefighters.”

Before being called to help, the fire fighters joined colleagues from across the service to mark the Firefighter Memorial Day with a two minutes silence at 12pm.
