JOYCE WALTON, of South Pool, writes:

In the 1800s there were some wonderful people, Quakers such as Cadbury, the founder of Bourneville Village, for example.

There were philanthropists who cared about their fellow men, such as the American George Peabody, who was sickened by what he witnessed while resident in this country. He donated large sums to promote education and slum clearance. The same goes for Sutton, Guinness, Lewis and others.

I wonder if history will show any philanthropists of these times.

Perhaps we could have Ashcroft Apartments; Barclays Buildings; Morrisons Mansions; Tesco Towers or Trust; Cameron Condominiums or Sainsbury Settlements?

What a legacy to be remembered by.

Today we have our good volunteer neighbours, some council accommodation and, of course, the wonderful National Health Service.
