Tony Porter, of High Street, Ashford, Kingsbridge, writes:

I read with some surprise the remarks emanating from the owner of Burgh Island, Gazette, January 19. They differ so widely from other opinions expressed in your piece about the threatened development in Bigbury Bay.

Deborah Orchard, sitting on her island, which is ‘fortunate to stand physically alone’, should spare a thought for the rest of us.

Doubtless she can always order fish and chips from her chef, but local residents and ‘incomers to the area’ will sorely miss the Bay Cafe, so expertly run by Craig Worthington and his efficient local staff.

I hope that, even now, common sense will prevail, saving that little haven, which has been magical for so many, from being swept away for the benefit of a fortunate few.
